Mapping digital connectivity projects across Banes

Simon Gould, leader of the FAB Connectivity strand, has updated us on a recent piece of work carried out to map the disparate projects that relate to digital connectivity in the Banes region.

Until now, there has been a wealth of different groups working on digital connectivity challenges, including both infrastructure and digital divide projects, but these have been undertaken in isolation to one another. Simon believes that through collaboration and engagement between groups, knowledge can be shared and progress in this space can be accelerated.

He said: “The FAB Connectivity strand of work has pulled together a fantastic group of really active organisations and individuals from the local digital scene. One of our first projects was to map activity across the region and to connect related projects to increase visibility of what is being worked on, and to reduce overlap and encourage the sharing of skills and learning. What we have found is that there is far more going on than I think many of us had initially realised.

“We are very keen to hear from anyone in the local area who is doing work focused on decreasing the digital divide – this could be through research or through practical on the ground activities. It could look like running computing clubs in community centres or schools, putting devices into the hands of those less likely to have access to them, or through policy change or fundraising activity. We’d love to hear what you’re working on in this space.

“Equally we’re keen to hear from those either working to enhance Banes digital infrastructure – or who are working on projects that require robust infrastructure for their success. Again, having a clear picture of local demand and of local supply in this sector is highly valuable.”
