The Future Ambition Board ‘Digital Connectivity’ group is working to support the rollout of 5G as part of a groundbreaking trial across central Bath.
What’s happening
A government-funded pilot scheme is installing 16 low-power cell radio units on lamp posts and other locations around Bath. The scheme also involves recruiting volunteers to test the network and provide feedback.
When
Testing has just begun and will last for around 12 months. Individuals, businesses and organisations such as the NHS or universities can get involved.
Where
The antennas will be located along the route of the city’s old walls, on Kingsmead Square, Union Street, Stall Street, St James Parade, outside Bath Spa Station, by the Green Park Road Car Park, and on the edge of the roof of No. 1 Bath Quays.
Who
Local residents, organisations, and frequent visitors to Bath city centre can sign up to be testers. Testers will receive a project-specific SIM card or e-SIM to access the network.
Why
The scheme aims to address connectivity issues that many residents say are a barrier to accessing services and information online. 5G offers internet access speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G. It can also support billions of devices, meaning even at exceptionally busy times such as during the Christmas market, people will have connectivity in Bath. Eventually, 5G could support remote healthcare interventions or road infrastructure management.
What’s next
If the pilot is successful, it may be opened up to the wider public. The pilot team is looking to speak to the public about the programme in the spring – watch this space!
